What is the OZEV EV charger grant?

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) — commonly called the OZEV grant — is a UK government subsidy that helps EV owners cover the cost of having a dedicated home charge point installed. It is administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and delivered through approved installers.

The grant is worth up to 75% of the purchase and installation cost, capped at £500 including VAT from April 2026 (up from £350). The great news is that you never have to deal with the grant application yourself — your installer handles everything and simply deducts the subsidy from your invoice.

The scheme replaced the earlier Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme in 2022 and is open to homeowners, flat owners, renters, and landlords — although the specific eligibility conditions differ by situation. Read on to find out whether you qualify.

Who qualifies for the EVHS grant?

To be eligible for the standard EVHS grant you must meet all of the following criteria:

You own or are the main driver of an eligible plug-in vehicle (pure EV or PHEV on the OZEV list)

You have a dedicated off-street parking space (private driveway, allocated bay, or garage)

You are installing the charger at a domestic property in the UK

You have not previously claimed this grant for the same property

You use an OZEV-approved installer to carry out the work

Flat owners and renters

If you live in a flat or rented property, you may be eligible for the Flat Owner and Renters (EV) Infrastructure Grant (FOEI) instead. This covers up to £500 per household from April 2026, or up to £30,000 for a block of flats installing shared charging infrastructure. Ask your installer which scheme applies to your situation.

How to claim the OZEV grant — step by step

01

Check you own a qualifying EV

The EVHS grant is only available to drivers of plug-in vehicles on the OZEV approved list. This includes most pure electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars sold in the UK. Check your vehicle model on the gov.uk eligibility list before proceeding.

02

Confirm you have off-street parking

You must have a dedicated off-street parking space — a driveway, private garage, or allocated parking bay. If you only have on-street parking, you may not qualify for the standard EVHS grant, but local authority lamp post charger schemes may be available in your area.

03

Choose an OZEV-approved installer

Only OZEV-approved installers can claim the grant on your behalf. Choosing a non-approved installer means you will not be eligible. Use our directory to find a verified, approved installer in your area.

04

Get a quote — the installer handles the rest

Your chosen installer will survey your property, recommend a suitable charge point, and provide a quote with the grant already deducted. After installation, they submit the claim to OZEV directly. You pay the net amount — typically £250–£1,000 after the grant.

How much does home EV charging installation cost after the grant?

The total cost of a home EV charger installation in the UK typically ranges from £750 to £1,500 depending on the charger brand, your property's electrical setup, and the complexity of the installation.

After the £500 EVHS grant (from April 2026), most homeowners pay between £350 and £1,050out of pocket. Some installations — particularly in properties with a modern consumer unit and a short cable run — come in at the lower end, making home charging very affordable.

Typical cost breakdown (example)
7kW smart charger (e.g. Zappi)£700–£900
Installation labour£150–£400
Additional cabling / consumer unit work£0–£250
Total before grant£850–£1,550
EVHS grant−£500 (from Apr 2026)
You pay£350–£1,050

Prices are illustrative. Get a quote from a local OZEV-approved installer for an accurate figure.

Which charger brands qualify for the OZEV grant?

The grant applies to any OZEV-eligible smart charge point — it is not tied to a specific brand. The charger must have a minimum output of 7kW and meet the smart charging requirements set out in the government's specifications (including the ability to delay charging, respond to smart meter signals, and operate in off-peak periods).

Popular brands that consistently appear on the OZEV approved charge point list include: Zappi, Hypervolt, Ohme, Pod Point, Wallbox Pulsar, EO Mini Pro, and Easee One. Your installer will confirm your chosen model is eligible before starting work.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the OZEV EVHS grant worth?

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grant covers up to 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV charger, up to a maximum of £500 including VAT from April 2026 (previously £350). If you own a flat or rental property, a separate scheme called the Flat Owner and Renters (EV) Infrastructure Grant (FOEI) may apply instead.

Who is eligible for the OZEV EV charger grant?

To qualify for the EVHS you must: (1) own or be the main driver of a qualifying plug-in vehicle (check the OZEV vehicle eligibility list); (2) have a dedicated off-street parking space (driveway or private garage); (3) apply through an OZEV-approved installer; (4) not have previously received this grant for the same property.

Can I get the grant if I live in a flat?

Yes — but through a different route. The Flat Owner and Renters (EV) Infrastructure Grant (FOEI) provides up to £500 from April 2026 for eligible flat owners and tenants, and up to £30,000 for blocks of flats installing shared EV charge points. You must still use an OZEV-approved installer.

Does the OZEV grant cover the cost of the charger itself?

Yes. The grant covers the total cost of supply and installation — including the charge point hardware, labour, and cabling — up to the £500 cap from April 2026. The installer deducts the grant amount from your invoice and then claims it back from OZEV directly, so you never have to interact with the government scheme yourself.

How do I apply for the OZEV EV charger grant?

You do not apply directly. Your OZEV-approved installer handles the entire grant application on your behalf. Simply choose an installer from the approved list, get a quote, and they will submit the claim to OZEV after completing the installation. There is no paperwork for you to fill in.

Can landlords claim the EV charger grant?

Residential landlords can apply through the EVHS for rental properties where the tenant owns a qualifying EV and has a dedicated parking space. The grant covers up to £500 per installation from April 2026. Commercial landlords installing EV charging for staff or customers should look at the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) instead.

What charger brands qualify for the OZEV grant?

The grant does not specify a brand — any OZEV-eligible charge point can be covered, provided it meets the scheme's technical requirements (minimum 7kW output, smart charging capability). Popular eligible brands include Zappi, Hypervolt, Ohme, Pod Point, Wallbox, and EO Charging. Your installer will confirm eligibility for your chosen model.
